Its often totally empy or full of gank teams. The abyss seems to be one of the biggest problems Aion has. Often the lower level people that should be questing there cannot or will not due to all the problem. Some ideas to get the abyss rolling again.

Increase Exp by alot like double exp in the abyss at all times. This will get the place crowded now before you go THATS CRAZY VIA!! everyone will be ganking. The fact is there are not that many on any server and if you are around a large group of your own faction then ganking turns into world pvp. This will cause you to pvp more and grnd less but you will feel like you got alot of exp but the truth is you wasted alot of time killing the other faction. This can only work well if the faction and balance which it seems aion tried hard to do at launch.

More soul bind location:  Man the ganking doesn't really bother me as much as when you release you are all the way across the map.  Normally I would say this is a big deal cuz on most maps you avoid the mobs and if you are unlucky you might run into a rifter but in the abyss you are much more likely to run into that bored 50 or gank group. By having more soul bind locations a player doesn't feel he is wasting tons of time just trying to get back to a quest location.

 
Maybe use something like mentoring and divide the abyss into areas defined by level(cheap aion gold). Like area one is 25 to 35 and if you go into that area as a 50 your level is reduced to 35. It would be a powerful level 35 but others would have a chance then.
